Green, Weathered, Test Tube Vase (Give your vase a farmhouse flare)

Before (Left), After (Right)

I bought this adorable test tube vase on amazon for $11. It was originally an unfinished wood frame. The listing on Amazon comes with the wood frame, four glass test tubes (one extra, just in case you break one), a test tube cleaning brush, and wall mounting hardware. It was a really good deal. Here is the Amazon link, if you’d like to purchase the same one.

As promised, here is my MUCH SMALLER tutorial for how to paint the wooden frame of the test tube vase 🙂

To give it this rustic look, I used a super nifty technique that I saw on YouTube.
You will need:
🌿White paint (I used leftover wall paint; Valspar, Oxford White in Satin- From Lowes)
🌿Green paint (I used leftover wall paint; Magnolia collection, Regal Leaf in Satin)
🌿Paint brushes (small for white and medium for green)
🌿A scentless, colorless candle
🌿Rag

Step 1 (White Paint Streaks)
Start with the white paint. Paint streaks of white in random spots where you might want the white to show through. I did a lot on the edges because that’s where paint naturally chips. Let dry completely

This picture is after I had already done the coat of green because I’m a ding dong, and forgot to take the picture with only the white streaks. However, you can see that I put a lot of white on the edges, and in random spots all over the wooden frame.

Step 2 (Wax On)
After the white streaks are dry, take your unscented/non tinted candle and rub it on the wood. Keep in mind that this is where the green paint will peel off later. So, I rubbed the candle on the edges, and over areas I had painted white. If you want some natural wood color to show through, rub the candle on those areas too.

Step 3 (Green Paint)
Paint the whole piece green 👍🌿. Let dry completely.

Step 4 (Wax Off)
After the green paint is dry, take your rag and rub the whole frame with pressure. Especially in areas where you intentionally put candle wax (the edges).

Step 5
(Optional) When my frame was finished, I wanted it to be a little lighter. I used the very small amount of white paint that was still on my small paint brush, and very lightly brushed white over some green areas.

That’s it!🌿😘 Leave a comment below if you have any questions.

It comes with the mounting hardware attached, so you can hang it right on the wall, or your DIY wooden sign (tutorial here), and add you favorite faux flowers! 🙂

Here is the finished product!

Warmly,
Megan

Hello! I'm Megan, the author of Home and Holidecor. I am a wife, mama, and interior decorator. Whether I am decorating inside of a home, an outdoor space, or decorating for a party/event, making a space look beautiful and special is what I love to do. To me, decorating is an art form. How you decorate your home, tells your personal and family story. Decorations at your wedding tell your love story. Your dream backyard or garden reveals your personal oasis. I think that's why I love it so much because it's almost like writing a story with furniture, paint, light fixtures, and picture frames. “Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love,” – Nate Berkus.
