How to Make a Burlap Wreath for Under $20 (Irish Wreath Tutorial)
A while back, I was browsing through Pinterest, as I so often am, and I kept seeing the most adorable wreaths. There were wreaths customized for different holidays, sports teams, and families. I wanted one BAD! I started researching the costs, and found that most Etsy listings start around $45-$50. Naturally, the more customization you add, the higher the cost. Because I know myself, I realized that if I purchased a wreath for a single holiday, I would want one for every holiday. That would get pricey really fast. It was then that my brain thought that all too familiar thought… “I can probably make that myself.” So, I read a tutorial, bought some supplies, problem solved my way through the tutorial, and now I’ve made around ten different wreaths (mostly for family and friends). It’s a really fun hobby that I totally recommend. You can make them in all different colors for all different holidays, and they make great gifts 🎁 too! I made this particular wreath for myself because I LOVE St. Patrick’s Day.
So, without further adieu….. here we go👇
Marterials
* A wire wreath (I used the 18” wire wreath frame from Walmart)
* Two rolls of burlap ribbon (5.5”x15ft from Walmart. They have a good selection of colors)
* Items for decorating the wreath (I found all of mine at the Dollar Tree).
Step 1 (Anchor Your Ribbon)
Fold the burlap ribbon in half lengthwise or “hotdog style” (sorry, I used to teach 1st grade 😂). Weave the folded ribbon through the wire frame starting from the inside and weaving out. This will anchor the ribbon. Anchor to the left of a separation bar (see photo below).
Step 2 (Creating Loops)
Next, twist the ribbon underneath so that it’s back at the inner most part of the wreath and pull your 1st loop through the inner space. This is the trickiest part and I would be lying to you if I said that it wasn’t a pain in the patutty to figure out the first time. But, once you figure it out, it gets way easier. Next, pull your 2nd loop through the middle space, and then a 3rd loop through the outer space. Twist the ribbon underneath again and repeat (inner, middle, outer).
You should have 6 loops per section. (✨The bigger loops you make, the the fluffier your wreath will look). Continue making loops until you run out of the first roll of ribbon. It should cover the first 4 sections of your wire frame.
Step 3 (Continue 2nd Ribbon)
Anchor your 2nd roll of ribbon the same way you did with the first. You’re going to anchor right after your last loop, inside the same section. You are anchoring here so that it will be hidden (see photo and video below). Continue to make your loops all the way around the wreath. Leave 2-3 inches of ribbon to tuck at the end, and cut off the rest.
Step 4 (Turn Loops Inside Out)
Your loops are finished! Now, you are going to turn each loop inside out. (See video below)
Step 5 (Decorating/Personalizing Your Wreath)
The rough part is over and now it’s time to decorate!
I wanted to add another color besides green, so I used some gold, sparkly tulle from the Dollar Tree. I cut pieces that were 5-6” long, folded them in half lengthwise, and tied them to the middle wire of the wreath. I honestly just eyeballed where each should go. Then, I tied them on, and it turned out really cute.
Lastly, I attached my bow (I used a sparkly, leprechaun bow tie from the Dollar Tree) by knotting it to the metal wire on the wreath. Then, I clipped my cute little chalkboard signs on to the ribbon, and wrote, “Luck of the Irish” using a chalkboard marker.
There you have it! I ended up not using a couple of the dollar store decorations because I didn’t want over clutter it (I’m sure they’ll get used elsewhere in my house).

Hello! I'm Megan, the author of Home and Holidecor. I am a wife, mama, and interior decorator. Whether I am decorating inside of a home, an outdoor space, or decorating for a party/event, making a space look beautiful and special is what I love to do. To me, decorating is an art form. How you decorate your home, tells your personal and family story. Decorations at your wedding tell your love story. Your dream backyard or garden reveals your personal oasis. I think that's why I love it so much because it's almost like writing a story with furniture, paint, light fixtures, and picture frames. “Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love,” – Nate Berkus.
